Tamotsu
Tamotsu means to uphold, to devote oneself to religious practice faithfully with the teachings.
Tamotsu in Japanese means to keep and never to release one’s upholding.
The five ways of upholding are explained as follows:
Shoji: To keep chanting the Odaimoku
Monji: To try to listen to the sermon (Gohomon) as many times as possible in order to strengthen your faith
Goji: To protect and support the HBS, the temple you belong to and HBS priests both materially and spiritually
Guji: To engage in missionary work and recommend the Odaimoku to others
Nenji: To keep in mind to be a good faithful follower
Nissen Shonin stated in his Gokyoka
Myoho wo tamotsu minareba Shaka Shobutsu
Bosatsu Shoten no tsuneni shugo ari
One will always be protected by the Buddha, Bodhisattvas and the Guardian Kings of Heaven through upholding the Fine Dharma, because they promise in the Lotus Sutra that they will protect the practitioners who uphold it.
