Fusegyo
‘Fuse’ of Fusegyo is donation, ‘gyo’ of Fusegyo is practice. So, Fusegyo means ‘The Practice of Donation’. Fusegyo is one of the six practices that bodhisattvas should engage in. Fuse is roughly divided into two kinds, namely, Hosse and Zaise. Hosse is Dharma (spiritual) donation which means expounding the Buddhist teachings to others. Zaise is material donation which means offering things and money for Buddhist activities. There are two kinds of O-fuse (donations), spiritual and material. Priests mainly give the Buddhist teaching to the lay followers as O-fuse, and lay followers mainly offer money to priests to support their religious activities as O-fuse. That is why we offer O-fuse to a priest on the occasion of a funeral service to accumulate good merits and virtues (Kudoku) and send them to the soul of the deceased. In the case of an Oko meeting, worshippers receive the teachings (Gohomon as a spiritual donation (Hosse)) from the priest, and the priest receives O-fuse as a material donation (Zaise). That is why, HBS priests should give a sermon to lay members at every opportunity.
